Iontophoresis is a method of introducing active substances into the skin by electric field strength.
For the iontophoresis treatment we can only use special substances - chemicals that disintegrate into ions. The conductive strength is the repulsion between the electrode and the load of ionized particles. The ions introduced into the skin by iontophoresis gather at the border of the epidermis and dermis, from where they are discharged through the deeper superficial vascular network and through the mouth of the sweat glands.
Iontophoresis causes considerable intensification of the effects of treatments, thanks to faster and deeper penetration of active ingredients through the epidermis and the beneficial effects on tissue pole of applied current.
WHAT DOES COSMETIC IONTOPHORESIS INVOLVE AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Ionophoresis treatment involves the use of a device that generates direct current and two electrodes (active and passive). A moist pad saturated with an appropriate active substance is applied to the treatment area, which is selected based on the needs and skin problems of the patient. The substances are introduced in the form of ions, which under the influence of the electric field move, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate deep into the tissues. The current itself also plays a significant role, as it generates a lot of heat in the tissues, improving circulation, providing better nourishment to the skin, and having anti-inflammatory effects. During the treatment, the patient may feel tingling and slight pricking sensations.
INDICATIONS FOR FACIAL IONTOPHORESIS TREATMENT:
Cosmetic iontophoresis is recommended for people who want to improve their skin condition, enhance the effectiveness of properly selected active substances, and support skin care targeted at specific aesthetic concerns. Thanks to the possibility of individualized selection of preparations, the treatment is used in the care of various skin types, especially dehydrated, mature, tired skin, and skin requiring regeneration.
Cosmetic iontophoresis is particularly recommended for:
- Dry and dehydrated skin – requiring intensive hydration, improved softness and elasticity, as well as a reduction of the feeling of tightness and discomfort.
- Mature skin with signs of aging – with visible fine lines, loss of firmness and elasticity, requiring anti-aging care support.
- Tired, dull skin lacking radiance – with uneven tone and deteriorated condition, which needs refreshing, hydration, and restoration of a radiant look.
- Skin with discoloration and uneven tone – requiring targeted brightening care using properly selected active substances.
- Sensitive and redness-prone skin – requiring gentle, individually tailored soothing care, provided there is proper integrity of the epidermal barrier and an absence of active irritation.
- Oily and seborrheic skin – with excessive sebum secretion and a tendency to develop imperfections, requiring preparations that support the regulation of skin function.
- Skin with uneven texture and a rough surface – requiring improved hydration, smoothing of the epidermis, and support for its natural protective functions.
- Skin requiring regeneration and strengthening of the protective barrier – especially in cases of severe dryness and deterioration of the epidermal condition, following a prior assessment of treatment tolerance.
- Individuals seeking gentle anti-aging care methods – who want to support their skin's condition and improve its appearance through treatments utilizing appropriately selected active ingredients.
Cosmetic iontophoresis can be performed as a standalone care treatment or as part of a comprehensive cosmetological therapy, complementing other procedures that improve skin condition.
At Ambasada Urody Clinic & Spa in Warsaw, each treatment is preceded by an individual assessment of the skin's needs, allowing for the selection of appropriate active substances, electrode polarity, and galvanic current parameters. Thanks to this, the therapy is targeted at real skin concerns, patient comfort, and achieving natural, gradual results.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF IONOFORESES TREATMENT ON THE FACE?
Cosmetic iontophoresis enhances the penetration of suitably selected active substances through the epidermal barrier, increasing the possibilities of skin care and supporting targeted cosmetological therapies. The effects of the treatment depend primarily on the type of product used, its properties, the condition of the skin, and individually selected galvanic current parameters.
The most important effects of cosmetic iontophoresis include:
- Intense skin hydration – supporting the delivery of suitably selected moisturizing ingredients that help improve the hydration level of the epidermis, reduce the feeling of tightness, and restore softness, smoothness, and comfort to the skin.
- Improvement of skin firmness and elasticity – supporting anti-aging care by enhancing the penetration of selected active substances that can favorably affect the skin's condition and its biomechanical properties.
- Smoothing of fine lines – improving hydration and the quality of the skin surface can reduce the visibility of fine lines, especially those associated with dehydration, giving the face a more rested appearance.
- Brightening and evening out skin tone – supporting therapies using appropriate brightening substances that can reduce the visibility of selected discolorations and improve the uniformity of skin tone.
- Soothing redness and irritation – the possibility of using preparations with soothing properties, supporting the care of sensitive and irritation-prone skin, after a prior assessment of the epidermal barrier's condition.
- Support for problematic skin care – increasing the availability of suitably selected active substances used in the care of oily, seborrheic, and blemish-prone skin.
- Improvement of skin smoothness and softness – supporting the action of conditioning preparations that promote the smoothing of the epidermal surface, improve its appearance, and leave the skin more pleasant to the touch.
- Increasing the effectiveness of selected cosmetological therapies – utilizing galvanic current to support the transport of active substances, making iontophoresis a valuable complement to individual skincare and treatment programs.
The first effects, particularly regarding hydration, smoothing, and improvement of skin comfort, may be noticeable after just one treatment. In the case of therapies targeted at hyperpigmentation or other chronic skin concerns, results usually require a series of treatments and proper home care.
The durability of the results depends on the active substances used, the regularity of the therapy, the initial skin condition, and daily skincare habits. At Ambasada Urody Clinic & Spa in Warsaw, the iontophoresis program is tailored individually, taking into account the real needs of the skin and the expected outcomes.
CONTRAINDICATIONS TO IONTOPHORESIS
Iontophoresis is a procedure that uses the flow of direct current through tissues; therefore, it requires a prior assessment of health status, skin condition, and possible contraindications to electrotherapy. The composition of the preparation used during the procedure is also of significant importance.
The most important contraindications include:
- pregnancy,
- pacemaker, cardioverter-defibrillator, and other implanted electronic medical devices,
- significant cardiac arrhythmias and selected cardiovascular diseases,
- epilepsy and other seizure disorders,
- metal implants located in the area of current flow,
- active bacterial, viral, and fungal infections in the treatment area,
- active herpes, open wounds, abrasions, epidermal damage, and fresh scars,
- active skin inflammation, especially with impairment of the epidermal barrier,
- severe skin irritation and hypersensitivity,
- allergy or hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the preparation used during the procedure,
- sensory disorders in the treatment area that make it difficult to assess the intensity of the current,
- recently performed procedures disrupting epidermal integrity, until the skin has fully regenerated,
- neoplastic diseases during active treatment, requiring individual medical qualification.
In the case of dental implants, metal orthodontic components, chronic diseases, or the use of medications affecting skin condition, an individual assessment of the feasibility of performing the procedure is necessary.
The safety of iontophoresis depends on proper qualification, appropriate skin preparation, and precise selection of treatment parameters. The specialist also takes into account the device manufacturer's recommendations and the characteristics of the preparation used.
RECOMMENDATIONS AFTER COSMETIC IONTOPHORESIS?
Cosmetic iontophoresis is a low-stress procedure for the skin, and most patients can return to daily activities immediately after therapy. Directly after the procedure, temporary redness, gentle tingling, or increased skin sensitivity may appear, which usually subside spontaneously.
To support skin regeneration, maintain its comfort, and prolong the effects of the active substances applied, it is recommended to:
- Intensive skin hydration – using moisturizing products that support the hydrolipid barrier, containing, among others, ceramides, panthenol, or appropriately selected humectant ingredients.
- Daily sun protection – applying sunscreen with SPF 30–50, especially in the case of therapies targeting hyperpigmentation and evening out skin tone.
- Gentle skin cleansing – using mild cleansing products for the first 24 hours to help preserve skin comfort and protect its protective barrier.
- Limiting the use of irritating substances – for approximately 24–48 hours, especially with sensitive skin, it is advisable to avoid strong exfoliating acids, retinoids, and intensive peels. Returning to standard skincare should take into account the skin's reaction.
- Avoiding intense heating of the skin – for the first 24 hours, it is advisable to limit sauna use, hot baths, and intense physical exertion, especially if redness or irritation occurs.
- Limiting exposure to UV radiation – especially in the case of sensitive or irritated skin, and during hyperpigmentation therapy. Regular photoprotection supports maintaining an even skin tone.
- Maintaining an interval before subsequent intensive treatments – the scheduling of chemical peels, laser therapy, microneedling, and other procedures should be determined with a specialist, taking into account the condition of the skin and the active substances used.
- Continuing individually selected home care – using appropriate cosmetics between treatments helps maintain the achieved results and supports long-term improvement in skin condition.
- Adhering to the recommended treatment schedule – in the case of treatments performed in a series, regularity and appropriately selected intervals between sessions are important for achieving and maintaining the expected results.
Properly performed iontophoresis is usually associated with a brief period of transient skin reactivity. In the event of persistent burning, worsening redness, blistering, or other concerning symptoms, contact the specialist who performed the procedure.
Appropriately selected post-treatment care is an important complement to iontophoresis, helping to maintain skin comfort and support the effects of the applied preparations.
Expert opinion
Iontophoresis is a treatment that, despite its long history, still holds an important place in modern cosmetology - provided that it is well-chosen and consciously used. In my practice, I mainly use iontophoresis as support in therapies for vascular, hyperreactive skin, as well as for problems with the hydrolipid barrier.
Thanks to this method, I can introduce active substances (such as vitamin A or hyaluronic acid) deep into the skin using galvanic current, which increases the effectiveness of the therapy without the need for aggressive techniques.
This treatment calms, soothes, and strengthens the skin. It also works great as a part of combined therapies - for example, after chemical peels, microneedle mesotherapy, or cleansing treatments. It provides a quick calming effect, improves complexion, strengthens blood vessels, and restores comfort to the skin.
Iontophoresis is a classic treatment that, in the right hands, can be a very effective tool - especially for individuals with delicate, demanding skin who need results without irritation.
