Psoriatic plaques

Psoriatic plaques are characteristic skin lesions that occur in the course of psoriasis—a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune skin disease with a genetic and immunological basis. Clinically, they manifest as erythematous (red), well-demarcated patches covered with a silvery-white scale. They result from accelerated proliferation of keratinocytes in the epidermis and the accompanying inflammation in the dermis. The disease is recurrent, with periods of remission and exacerbation. Psoriatic plaques can be located on the scalp, elbows, knees, the sacral area, as well as on the face, hands, and feet, and their clinical appearance can vary depending on the type of psoriasis.
