Vaginoplasty

Vaginal plastic surgery (vaginoplasty) is a surgical procedure involving the reconstruction or tightening of the vaginal walls to improve their anatomical and aesthetic function. The procedure is most often performed in women who have experienced excessive stretching of the vaginal tissues, for example as a result of vaginal childbirth, aging processes, or connective tissue disorders. The procedure can improve pelvic floor muscle tone and sexual quality of life, and can also reduce symptoms associated with a feeling of "vaginal looseness." Contemporary aesthetic gynecology, in addition to classical surgical methods, also uses minimally invasive techniques such as laser therapy or radiofrequency, which affect collagen remodeling and improve tissue tone.

Vaginoplasty – what does it involve?

Vaginal repair is a surgical procedure performed to restore the normal anatomy of the vagina by removing excess stretched mucosa and reinforcing the pelvic floor muscle structures. The most commonly performed variant of the procedure is posterior vaginal repair (posterior colporrhaphy), which involves approximating the levator ani muscles and narrowing the posterior vaginal wall.

During the procedure the surgeon:

  • removes excess stretched mucosa,
  • reinforces and sutures weakened muscle structures,
  • reshapes the vaginal introitus, restoring proper tissue tone.

The procedure is most often performed under general or regional anesthesia. The operative time is usually 60–120 minutes, and hospitalization typically lasts 1 day.

The most common indications include:

  • vaginal laxity after vaginal deliveries,
  • prolapse of the vaginal walls,
  • pelvic floor muscle weakness,
  • discomfort during sexual intercourse,
  • sexual dysfunction related to loss of vaginal tone.

In aesthetic medicine, minimally invasive methods to improve vaginal tone are also used, such as:

  • fractional CO₂ laser,
  • microneedle radiofrequency,
  • procedures stimulating collagen remodeling in the vaginal mucosa.

These techniques do not replace classical surgery in cases of significant tissue laxity, but may be effective for milder disturbances of vaginal tone.

Vaginoplasty – side effects

As with any surgical procedure, vaginal plastic surgery carries the possibility of complications. In most cases they are rare and transient, but they require proper patient qualification and operator experience.

The most commonly observed adverse effects include:

  • pain and swelling of the operated area,
  • postoperative bleeding or hematoma,
  • surgical wound infection,
  • temporary sensory disturbances within the vagina,
  • tissue scarring.

Less frequently, complications may occur such as:

  • vaginal narrowing hindering sexual intercourse,
  • damage to adjacent structures (e.g. the rectum),
  • chronic pelvic pain.

The healing process usually takes 4–8 weeks, during which time it is recommended to:

  • refrain from sexual intercourse,
  • avoid intense physical exertion,
  • follow hygiene recommendations.

A properly performed procedure and appropriate postoperative care significantly reduce the risk of complications.

Vaginoplasty – opinions

Patients' opinions regarding vaginoplasty are in most cases positive, especially when the procedure is performed for functional rather than solely aesthetic reasons. Clinical studies have shown that the procedure can significantly improve sexual quality of life and women's psychological well-being.

The most commonly reported benefits after the procedure are:

  • improvement in vaginal tone and elasticity,
  • increased sexual satisfaction,
  • reduction of the sensation of vaginal 'looseness',
  • improved self-confidence and intimate comfort.

However, the medical literature emphasizes that assessment of the procedure's effects is largely subjective, because it depends on the patient's expectations, preoperative anatomical condition, and the quality of sexual relationships.

For this reason, before the procedure it is recommended to:

  • a thorough gynecological consultation,
  • assessment of pelvic floor muscle function,
  • a realistic discussion of the possible effects and limitations of the procedure.

Vaginoplasty – price

The cost of vaginal plastic surgery depends on many factors, such as the scope of the operation, the surgeon's experience, the technique used, and the clinic's standard. In Poland, the price of the surgical procedure most often falls within the range:

around 6,000 – 15,000 PLN.

The final cost is influenced by, among others:

  • the type of anesthesia,
  • length of hospital stay,
  • the extent of tissue reconstruction,
  • possible additional procedures (e.g., perineoplasty).

An alternative to surgical operation may be minimally invasive aesthetic gynecology procedures, which stimulate regeneration of the vaginal mucosa and improve tissue tone, including:

  • laser vaginal revitalization,
  • radiofrequency treatment of intimate tissues,
  • procedures stimulating collagen production in the vagina.

These procedures are usually less expensive than traditional surgery; however, their effects are more subtle and often require a series of treatments.
