Banana roll
back to main page
The banana roll is a colloquial term for a characteristic fold of fat tissue and skin located in the lower part of the buttocks, just below their border, in the area where the buttock transitions into the posterior surface of the thigh. The name comes from the crescent, elongated shape resembling a banana. This condition is not a disease entity, but an aesthetic concern related to anatomical structure, distribution of fat tissue, skin laxity, and aging processes. The banana roll can occur in both slim individuals and those with excess fat tissue, and its visibility often increases with the loss of buttock firmness and the disruption of body proportions. In aesthetic medicine, this issue is analyzed comprehensively - taking into account skin quality, the tension of supporting ligaments, buttock volume, and the anatomy of the posterior thigh.
Banana roll - what it is
The banana roll is an accumulation of adipose tissue and lax skin in the lower part of the buttock, within the so-called gluteal fold. This area plays an important anatomical function because it defines the boundary between the buttock and the thigh. In young people and those with good tissue quality, this fold remains subtle, while with age or changes in body shape, it may become more pronounced.
In clinical practice, the banana roll is not solely a local excess of fat. Very often, the problem simultaneously involves:
- reduced skin tone,
- loss of buttock tissue support,
- sagging of the lower part of the buttocks,
- local microcirculation disorders,
- hypertrophy of fat cells in the subgluteal area.
The anatomy of the gluteal muscles is also of significant importance. Weakening of the gluteus maximus muscle and loss of volume in the upper part of the buttocks can cause optical deepening of the banana roll. For this reason, modern aesthetic medicine does not treat this area as an isolated defect, but as an element of the entire architecture of the buttocks.
The problem occurs more frequently in women, which results from a physiologically greater tendency to accumulate adipose tissue in the lower parts of the body. Hormonal, genetic, and biomechanical factors are also important.
Banana roll - what it looks like
The banana roll takes the form of a horizontal or slightly curved bulge visible below the buttock. Most often, it forms a soft roll separating the buttock from the thigh. Depending on the body structure and the advancement of the changes, it can be:
- gently defined only during movement,
- visible in a standing position,
- present regardless of muscle tension,
- combined with cellulite and skin laxity,
- asymmetrical.
A characteristic feature of the banana roll is the disruption of the smooth transition between the buttock and the thigh. Aesthetically, it is considered that a harmonious buttock should have a clear lift and a smooth contour without an overly defined subgluteal fold.
The visibility of the banana roll may increase during:
- sitting,
- walking,
- tensing muscles,
- wearing tight clothing,
- gaining weight.
In aesthetic diagnostics, not only the fat roll itself is assessed, but also:
Assessment element | Clinical significance |
|---|---|
Skin quality | Assessment of laxity and elasticity |
Buttock projection | Degree of buttock prominence |
Subgluteal fold | Depth and length of the fold |
Adipose tissue volume | Distribution of adipocytes |
Muscle tone | Support for soft tissues |
In many cases, the banana roll coexists with cellulite, lipodystrophy, and a loss of skin firmness in the thighs and buttocks. It can also cause optical shortening of the legs and disruption of body proportions.
Banana roll - why it appears
The formation of the banana roll is multifactorial. Tissue aging processes and anatomical predispositions play the most significant role. With age, there is a gradual weakening of collagen and elastin fibers, which leads to a loss of skin tension and sagging of the buttock tissues.
The main causes include:
Genetic predisposition
The distribution of adipose tissue is largely genetically determined. In some people, the subgluteal area is a natural fat storage site, even with a normal body weight.
Tissue aging
Reduced production of collagen and elastin leads to:
- skin laxity,
- loss of buttock firmness,
- deepening of the subgluteal fold,
- weakening of supporting structures.
Body weight changes
Frequent weight fluctuations promote skin stretching and remodeling of fat tissue. After weight reduction, the banana roll may become more visible due to excess loose skin.
Sedentary lifestyle
Prolonged sitting weakens the gluteal muscles and impairs microcirculation. Insufficient physical activity also promotes the accumulation of fat tissue in the lower parts of the body.
Disorders of posture and biomechanics
Incorrect pelvic alignment, weakness of deep muscles, and impaired function of the gluteal muscles can affect the shape of the buttocks and the deepening of the subgluteal fold.
Modern aesthetic medicine emphasizes that effective banana roll therapy requires an individual analysis of the causes of the problem. Fat removal alone, without improving skin quality and lifting the buttocks, often does not yield a satisfactory aesthetic result.
Banana roll and sagging buttocks - connection
The banana roll very often co-occurs with sagging buttocks, because both problems result from similar anatomical mechanisms and aging processes. With the loss of skin firmness and the weakening of supporting structures, buttock tissues move downwards, which increases pressure and volume within the subgluteal fold.
The more the lower part of the buttock descends, the more pronounced the banana roll becomes. This phenomenon can lead to:
- loss of buttock projection,
- disruption of body proportions,
- optical shortening of the legs,
- a heavier appearance of the lower body.
In aesthetic medicine, there is a growing shift away from spot-treating the banana roll solely through fat reduction. Significantly better results are achieved through combination therapy, which includes:
- improving skin tension,
- collagen stimulation,
- buttock modeling,
- tissue lifting,
- strengthening the gluteal muscles,
- reducing local fat deposits.
Depending on the problem, the methods used include, among others:
- microneedle radiofrequency technologies,
- HIFU,
- collagen-stimulating treatments,
- endermologie,
- injection lipolysis,
- muscle-strengthening electromagnetic waves,
- body contouring using thermal and vacuum technologies.
At Ambasada Urody, modern procedures are used to improve skin tension, model the buttocks, and reduce local accumulations of fat tissue, tailored individually to the patient's anatomy and the severity of the changes.
