Hoodoplasty
back to main page
Hoodoplasty (clitoral hood reduction) is a procedure within the field of aesthetic gynecology and intimate surgery that involves the reduction of excess skin covering the clitoris (known as the clitoral hood). The aim of the procedure is to improve physical comfort, the aesthetics of the intimate area, and—in selected cases—increase sexual satisfaction by exposing part of the clitoris. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or short-term intravenous sedation in an outpatient setting. Hoodoplasty does not involve intervention on the clitoris itself (erectile and nerve structures) but solely focuses on reshaping the excess skin fold, which is crucial for safety and maintaining sexual function.
Hoodoplasty – what is it
Hoodoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves:
- removal of excess skin from the clitoral hood,
- exposure of part of the clitoral glans,
- reshaping of the skin folds within the labia minora, if there is coexisting hypertrophy.
Indications for the procedure
The most common indications include:
- hypertrophy or laxity of the clitoral hood,
- discomfort during intercourse (mechanical irritation, hypersensitivity),
- difficulties in achieving sexual satisfaction associated with excessive coverage of the clitoris,
- aesthetic concerns and asymmetry of the clitoral area,
- coexistence with labiaplasty (plastic surgery of the labia minora).
Anatomical aspects and safety
The clitoris is a highly innervated erectile organ. It is crucial to:
- preserve the integrity of nerve structures (dorsal nerves of the clitoris),
- avoid excessive skin resection,
- ensure precise hemostasis and use atraumatic suturing techniques.
The procedure should be performed by a physician experienced in gynecological or intimate area plastic surgery. An improperly performed procedure can lead to sensory disturbances, pain, or scarring.
Hoodoplasty - effects
The effects of hoodoplasty are both functional and aesthetic. The final result is assessed approximately 6–12 weeks post-procedure, when swelling has subsided and the scar remodeling process is complete.
Aesthetic Effects
- better proportion between the clitoral hood and labia minora,
- reduction of "excess" skin in the upper vulva area,
- improvement of symmetry,
- a more harmonious appearance of the intimate area.
Functional Effects
- increased clitoral exposure,
- for some patients – easier stimulation and increased sexual satisfaction,
- reduction of mechanical irritation during physical activity and intercourse,
- improvement of psychosexual comfort.
However, it should be emphasized that:
- the procedure is not a treatment for libido disorders with hormonal or psychological causes,
- the effect on sexual function is individual and dependent on various factors (psychosexual, hormonal, relational).
Possible Complications
Like any surgical procedure, hoodoplasty is associated with risks:
- swelling and bruising,
- temporary sensory disturbances,
- wound infection,
- hypertrophic scarring (rare),
- asymmetry requiring correction.
Proper qualification, surgical technique, and adherence to postoperative recommendations minimize the risk of complications.
Hoodoplasty - price
The cost of hoodoplasty depends on several medical and organizational factors:
- the extent of skin resection,
- potential combination with labiaplasty,
- type of anesthesia used,
- experience of the operator,
- standard of the medical facility.
In Poland, the cost of the procedure typically ranges from a few to several thousand PLN, especially if performed in conjunction with labia minora plasty. The price usually includes:
- qualification consultation,
- the procedure itself,
- postoperative check-up.
It is important to remember that hoodoplasty is an elective procedure (not covered by the National Health Fund) and should be preceded by a detailed gynecological interview, assessment of anatomy, and discussion of the patient's realistic expectations.
