Plasma
Plasma

Plasma is the fourth state of matter, formed as a result of gas ionization, where molecules lose or gain electrons, creating a mixture of ions, electrons, and neutral particles. In aesthetic medicine, low-temperature plasma is used, generated in a controlled manner, allowing it to affect only the superficial layers of the skin. Its action involves local micro-ablation of the epidermis, protein coagulation, and initiation of regenerative processes without the need for surgically breaking tissue continuity. Due to its high precision and limited thermal penetration, plasma has found application in skin corrective procedures, serving as an alternative to traditional invasive methods.

Plasma – What is it

From a physical perspective, plasma is an ionized gas in which the energy supplied to the molecules causes the separation of electrons from atomic nuclei. In clinical conditions, plasma is generated by an electric discharge between the tip of the device and the atmospheric air. In aesthetic medicine, the ability to precisely control energy and pulse duration is crucial, allowing for selective action on the epidermis and the superficial layers of the dermis.

The biological mechanism includes:

  • immediate coagulation of epidermal proteins,
  • contraction of collagen fibers,
  • stimulation of repair processes and neocollagenesis,
  • antiseptic action, reducing the risk of infection.

Unlike lasers or electrocoagulation, plasma does not require direct contact with the tissue, which reduces the risk of deep damage and promotes controlled healing.

Plasma - Types

In medical practice, several types of plasma are distinguished, differing in physical parameters and range of applications:

  • Low-temperature (cold) plasma
Most commonly used in dermatology and aesthetic medicine; allows for targeted, superficial action.
  • High-temperature plasma
Mainly used in surgery for coagulation and cutting of tissues.
  • Atmospheric plasma
Generated from air without the use of additional technical gases.
  • Gas plasma (e.g., argon)
Used in selected procedural interventions, mainly outside of aesthetics.

From the perspective of patient safety and predictability of effects in aesthetic procedures, low-temperature plasma remains the standard, allowing for control of the depth of action and minimization of the risk of complications.

Plasma – Applications in Aesthetic Medicine

Plasma is used in procedures aimed at non-surgical soft tissue correction and skin quality improvement. Its action is based on inducing controlled micro-damage, which triggers the body's natural regeneration mechanisms.

The most common indications include:

  • excess skin around the eyelids,
  • fine wrinkles and static lines,
  • superficial scars and stretch marks,
  • benign skin lesions,
  • loss of skin tension and elasticity.

The results of the treatments include gradual tightening of tissues and improvement in skin structure, visible in the weeks following the procedure. The treatments are performed under local anesthesia, without the need for hospitalization, and the healing process includes the temporary formation of small scabs at the application sites.

Plasma treatments

Plasma treatments comprise a group of dermatological and aesthetic procedures with corrective and regenerative characteristics. The most commonly used include:

  • plasma eyelid correction,
  • removal of benign skin lesions,
  • reduction of fine wrinkles on the face,
  • therapy for superficial scars and stretch marks,
  • procedures to improve skin firmness on the face and body.

Each treatment requires an individual qualification that considers the skin condition, the location of the issue, and contraindications such as active infections, healing disorders, or active cancerous diseases. Plasma serves as a supplement to classical aesthetic methods, offering high precision and predictability of results with limited invasiveness.
