Surgical consultation

A surgical consultation is a specialist medical appointment conducted by a surgeon, aimed at assessing the patient's health, making a diagnosis, and determining further therapeutic management. During the consultation the doctor takes a detailed medical history, evaluates the symptoms reported by the patient, performs a physical examination and — if necessary — orders additional diagnostic tests, such as laboratory tests, ultrasonography or computed tomography. A surgical consultation is often the first stage of the treatment process for conditions requiring surgical intervention, but it can also be part of monitoring previously performed procedures or assessing skin lesions, soft tissue tumors or vascular problems.

Surgical consultation versus surgery

A surgical consultation is not equivalent to qualification for an operative procedure. In clinical practice it constitutes a diagnostic stage that allows assessment of the nature of the health problem and selection of the safest treatment method. In many cases, surgical intervention is not necessary, and symptoms can be effectively treated with conservative methods, pharmacological measures, or minimally invasive procedures.

During the consultation, the surgeon analyzes a number of factors influencing the therapeutic decision, such as:

  • the type and duration of symptoms,
  • the results of previous diagnostic tests,
  • comorbidities,
  • the patient's age and overall health status,
  • the risk of complications associated with a potential procedure.

If there are indications for surgery, the surgical consultation also serves as a qualification visit. The physician then discusses with the patient the possible surgical treatment methods, the course of the procedure, potential complications, and the recovery period. For certain conditions – such as hernias, skin lesions, cysts, lipomas, or varicose veins – the decision to operate may be made during the first visit; however, additional diagnostic tests are often required beforehand.

Surgical consultation – in person or online

A surgical consultation can take place as a traditional visit in a doctor's office or as a teleconsultation, that is, medical advice provided remotely via telephone or video call. The choice of visit format depends primarily on the nature of the health problem and the need to perform a physical examination.

In-person consultation is particularly important in situations when a direct examination of the patient is necessary. The surgeon can then assess skin lesions, soft tissue masses, hernias, or symptoms of vascular diseases through palpation, evaluation of tissue tension, or checking the tenderness of specific anatomical structures.

Online consultation, on the other hand, can be useful in certain situations, for example when the patient:

  • wishes to review imaging or laboratory test results,
  • needs a specialist's opinion before a planned surgery,
  • requires follow-up after a previously performed procedure,
  • lives far from the medical center.

However, it is important to emphasize that a teleconsultation cannot always replace a traditional visit. In many cases, a definitive surgical diagnosis requires a direct examination of the patient and assessment of changes on physical examination.

Surgical consultation – price

The cost of a surgical consultation depends on many factors, such as the location of the medical facility, the doctor's experience, the scope of the visit, and any need to perform additional diagnostic tests. In Poland the price of a private surgical consultation most often ranges from 200–400 PLN, but in reputable medical centers or for consultations with highly specialized doctors the cost of the visit may be higher.

The final price of the visit may be influenced by, among other things:

  • extended diagnostics during the consultation (e.g., an ultrasound),
  • analysis of medical records and imaging tests,
  • qualification for a surgical procedure,
  • duration of the consultation.

In some cases a surgical consultation may be reimbursed under the public healthcare system, but this usually requires a referral from a primary care physician or a specialist. In practice many patients opt for private visits because of shorter waiting times for a consultation and the possibility of starting treatment more quickly.
