Lip asymmetry
back to main page
Lip asymmetry is a disturbance of the proportions between the right and left sides of the vermilion, the Cupid's bow, or the lip contour. To a small extent it occurs in most people and is a natural facial feature, but in some cases it can be pronounced and affect the aesthetics of the smile and the proportions of the lower face. Asymmetry may involve the volume, shape, or height of the upper or lower lip, as well as the positioning of the corners of the mouth. Its causes may be congenital, related to aging, injuries, or disorders of the facial muscles. Contemporary aesthetic medicine offers various corrective methods aimed at restoring harmony to facial features while maintaining a natural appearance.
Lip asymmetry – causes
The causes of lip asymmetry can be very varied and include both anatomical and functional factors. In many cases the asymmetry is minor and results from natural differences in the structure of the facial soft tissues.
The most common causes of lip asymmetry include:
1. Congenital and anatomical factors
- natural differences in the development of the facial expression muscles
- asymmetric structure of the maxilla or mandible
- differences in the volume of the lip vermilion
- malocclusion affecting the position of the lips
2. The aging process
With age, structural changes occur within the facial tissues. These include:
- loss of fat tissue volume
- weakening of the facial expression muscles
- decreased production of collagen and elastin
- drooping of the corners of the mouth
These processes can lead to a gradual worsening of asymmetry.
3. Injuries and surgical procedures
Asymmetry may also occur as a result of:
- mechanical injuries to the face
- postoperative scars
- complications from previous aesthetic procedures
4. Neurological disorders
In some cases lip asymmetry is related to abnormal function of the facial nerves or muscles. This may occur, for example, after facial nerve palsy, a stroke, or in the course of neurological diseases.
Lip asymmetry – correction
Correction of lip asymmetry involves restoring as symmetrical a shape of the lips as possible and improving the proportions of the lower part of the face. Precise analysis of the patient's anatomy and determination of the cause of the asymmetry are of key importance.
The process of correcting asymmetry usually includes several stages:
1. Analysis of facial proportions
The physician assesses:
- symmetry of the vermilion of the lips
- height of the upper and lower lip
- contour of the Cupid's bow
- position of the corners of the mouth
- tension of the mimetic muscles
In clinical practice, the relationship of the lips to the nose, chin and facial midline is also analyzed.
2. Correction of tissue volume
If the asymmetry results from a difference in lip volume, it can be equalized by precisely increasing the volume in the appropriate areas. The procedure is performed point-by-point so as not to change the natural proportions of the face.
3. Correction of muscle tension
In cases of asymmetry resulting from uneven function of the mimetic muscles, methods that reduce excessive muscle activity on one side of the mouth are used.
4. Correction of the mouth corners
In some people, the asymmetry mainly concerns the position of the mouth corners. Equalizing this area can restore a more harmonious appearance to the smile.
It is worth emphasizing that complete facial symmetry practically does not occur in nature. The aim of treatment is therefore improvement of proportions and harmony of facial features, not creating a perfectly symmetric shape of the lips.
Lip asymmetry – treatments
Contemporary aesthetic medicine offers several methods for correcting lip asymmetry. The choice of technique depends on the cause of the problem, the degree of asymmetry, and the patient's anatomical structure.
The most commonly used methods include:
1. Lip shaping with hyaluronic acid
One of the most frequently used methods is the injection of a preparation containing hyaluronic acid, which allows for:
- evening out lip volume
- correction of the lip contour
- improvement of Cupid's bow symmetry
- lifting of the corners of the mouth
The product is administered to precisely defined locations, which allows correcting asymmetry without excessive lip augmentation.
2. Treatments with botulinum toxin
In cases where asymmetry results from excessive activity of the facial expression muscles, botulinum toxin is used, which reduces the tension of the muscles responsible for the asymmetric positioning of the lips.
3. Regenerative treatments
In some patients, methods that improve tissue quality are also used, such as:
- mesotherapy
- platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
- tissue biostimulators
These procedures improve skin structure and can indirectly affect the appearance of the lips.
4. Surgical procedures
In cases of significant asymmetry resulting from anatomical defects or scars, surgical correction may be necessary, including, among others:
- lip surgery
- scar correction
- reconstructive procedures
The choice of treatment method should always be preceded by a thorough medical history and an anatomical assessment of the face, because not every asymmetry requires intervention.
In clinical practice, combined therapy is often used, which allows achieving the most natural and harmonious aesthetic result.
