Bunny lines

Bunny lines, also referred to as bunny lines or nose wrinkles, are facial expression lines that form mainly on the lateral surfaces of the upper part of the nose. They usually run diagonally, horizontally, or almost vertically and become visible when smiling, laughing, squinting, wrinkling the nose, or expressing disgust. Their direct cause is the repetitive contraction of the nasal muscles and adjacent muscles of the midface. Initially, they appear only during facial expressions, whereas over time, they may remain visible even with a relaxed face. Bunny lines are a benign aesthetic change, and their presence does not indicate a disease. The reduction method is selected based on muscle dynamics, the course of the lines, skin quality, and previous procedures within the forehead and glabellar area.

Bunny lines - what are they

Bunny lines are mimic wrinkles of the midface. Most often, they appear symmetrically on both sides of the nasal bridge, although their shape, number, and depth may differ between the right and left sides. A typical pattern includes short, diagonal lines radiating from the lateral surface of the nose toward the medial canthus of the eye. In some individuals, the wrinkles run more transversely across the nasal bridge or descend toward the cheeks.

Primarily involved in their formation are:

  • the transverse part of the nasalis muscle, which constricts the nostrils and wrinkles the lateral surface of the nose,
  • the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle, which elevates the upper lip and the nasal ala,
  • the procerus muscle, affecting the skin of the nasal root and the interbrow area,
  • medial fibers of the orbicularis oculi muscle,
  • in some individuals, also fibers of the depressor supercilii muscle.

Due to their location, bunny lines are sometimes confused with glabellar wrinkles, transverse lines of the nasal root, or furrows formed when elevating the nasal alae. Distinguishing these patterns is of therapeutic importance, as each group of lines may result from the activity of a different muscular system.

During an examination of facial expressions, the specialist assesses the face at rest as well as during smiling, closing the eyelids tightly, and intentional nose wrinkling. Such an analysis makes it possible to determine whether the dominant source of the lines is the nasalis muscle, the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, or the interaction of several muscles.

Bunny lines - why do they form

The primary mechanism behind the formation of bunny lines is the repeated folding of the skin over contracting muscles. Each contraction shifts the skin of the nose according to the direction of the muscle fibers. Upon relaxation, young and resilient skin quickly returns to its original position. Over time, its ability to fully restore its shape declines, and a temporary fold can turn into a permanent line.

Contributing factors include:

  • intense or frequently repeated facial expressions, especially scrunching the nose while smiling and laughing,
  • individual anatomy of the nasal muscles and their connections with the muscles of the periorbital area and the upper lip,
  • genetically determined skin thickness, elasticity, and susceptibility to folding,
  • age-related progressive fragmentation of collagen and elastic fibers,
  • chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which intensifies the degradation of the skin's extracellular matrix,
  • tobacco smoking, oxidative stress, and inadequate sun protection,
  • reduced hydration of the stratum corneum and decreased glycosaminoglycan content in the skin.

Bunny lines can also develop as compensatory lines after botulinum toxin treatments performed in the glabellar, forehead, or periocular areas. Weakening selected muscles alters the distribution of forces within the face. The nasalis muscle or adjacent muscles may then take on a greater part of the expression, making the folding of the nasal skin more pronounced. This phenomenon highlights the importance of a comprehensive assessment of facial expressions before the procedure and during follow-up visits.

Bunny lines - when do they become visible

Early bunny lines are dynamic in nature. They appear during specific facial movements and disappear once the muscles relax. They are particularly visible during:

  • a wide smile or laughter,
  • wrinkling of the nose,
  • elevation of the upper lip and nasal alae,
  • squinting,
  • reactions to strong odors, light, or emotions.

The age of onset for these lines shows high individual variability. In individuals with pronounced facial expressions, they may become noticeable as early as early adulthood. The mere presence of dynamic lines does not indicate accelerated skin aging. Their persistence is determined by the cumulative effect of repeated contractions and the biological resistance of the skin to deformation.

Along with intrinsic aging and photoaging, a decrease in collagen synthesis, disorganization of elastin fibers, a reduced water-binding capacity, and a flattening of the dermal-epidermal junction occur. Wrinkles gradually become visible with increasingly subtle facial movements, and eventually also at rest. This pattern is referred to as static or fixed wrinkles.

Assessment of severity should include:

  • visibility of lines at rest,
  • depth during maximal contraction,
  • symmetry of muscle function,
  • the course of wrinkles relative to the nasal alae and the medial canthi of the eyes,
  • skin quality, thickness, and elasticity,
  • upper lip mobility during smiling,
  • history of prior botulinum toxin treatments.

Bunny lines - how to reduce

The most effective reduction method depends on whether the muscular component, established damage to the skin structure, or a combination of both mechanisms predominates.

The foundation of skincare is daily broad-spectrum photoprotection, which reduces ultraviolet radiation-activated collagen degradation. Retinoids, antioxidants, moisturizing substances, and products supporting the epidermal barrier play an auxiliary role. Skincare improves the quality of the skin surface and can limit the setting of fine lines, but it exerts little effect on excessive muscle activity.

For predominant dynamic wrinkles, the first-choice method remains botulinum toxin type A. The product cleaves a protein involved in the release of acetylcholine at nerve endings. This leads to a temporary reduction in neuromuscular transmission and controlled weakening of selected muscle fibers. The skin is then subjected to less folding, allowing the lines to smooth out.

The procedure requires precise determination of the source of contraction. An overly broad effect toward the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi muscle may temporarily alter the smile, upper lip height, or movement of the nasal ala. Possible local reactions also include tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising, and transient asymmetry. The risk is minimized by knowledge of anatomy, conservative dosing, and individualization of injection points.

In the case of established lines, muscular treatment can be supplemented by methods that improve skin quality, such as controlled collagen remodeling, biorevitalization, or resurfacing procedures. The nasal area requires cautious qualification due to rich vascularization and the proximity of muscles that influence the smile. Direct filling of superficial nasal wrinkles with hyaluronic acid has limited application and is associated with significant vascular risk.

Treatments for bunny lines

In Ambasada Urody's offer, the treatment directly intended for the reduction of bunny lines is wrinkle removal with botulinum toxin. The treatment involves the precise administration of the product into the muscles responsible for wrinkling the lateral surfaces of the nose. The effect develops gradually over a few days, and its full assessment is usually performed after about two weeks. The duration of the result depends, among other things, on muscle strength, metabolism, the product used, and previous therapies.

Available procedures include:

  • classic botulinum toxin for nose wrinkles, targeted at excessive muscle activity,
  • liquid neurobotulinum, also offered for the reduction of wrinkles on the nose,
  • facial feature lifting with botulinum toxin, when bunny lines are part of a broader muscular imbalance of the midface,
  • mesobotox, used for fine wrinkles and reduced skin quality as a procedure combining subtle neuromodulatory action with mesotherapy,
  • Botox-Lift, combining botulinum toxin with a skin booster in a treatment covering a larger area of the face,
  • Jalu-Toxin, a therapy combining botulinum toxin with an amino acid product, targeted simultaneously at facial expressions and skin condition.

The most specific effect on bunny lines is provided by the local administration of botulinum toxin into the properly identified muscle. Combined procedures play a complementary role, especially with coexisting dehydration, fine static wrinkles, or reduced skin elasticity. The final treatment plan should result from an examination of facial expressions, smile assessment, nasal anatomy, and the history of previous treatments.
